Novice rowing is at the heart of SUBC, the nurturing of new talent has always formed the basis of Southampton crews. This ethos has ensured that the club has never had to rely solely on an intake of experienced rowers. Many oarsmen and women who have started their careers at the University have gone onto compete on the international stage (please see the Notable Alumni).
The Novice Men's and Women's squads are for inexperienced rowers who may have had some experience of rowing as part of a school or sports club, right down to those who have never seen a rowing boat before. We encourage people of all heights and builds to try our sport out, including those from all years, whether you are joining us in your first year or finishing the final year of a postgraduate degree. The normal intake each year is around 50-60, sometimes even more, so joining the boat club is a great way to meet new people, especially during your fresher year here at Southampton University.
In terms of training, the Novice squads start out minimal, with sessions only being once or twice at the weekends, increasing up to a more intense program as the season progresses with weights sessions and ergometer (rowing machine) sessions being added in to improve core strength and fitness. Once boat technique and fitness has reached an appropriate level Novices are integrated into the Senior squads to further accelerate their progress, being on a more intensive training program and learning from the experience of their crewmates. For information on the senior training program see the Senior Men’s or Senior Women's page.
Every year SUBC enters novice boats into the VIII’s Head of the River race and both BUCS Head and BUCS Regatta, often doing very well in the rankings. In 2008 the SUBC Novice’s won both Gold and Silver at BUCS events, an excellent result which we hope to repeat in the coming seasons.
If rowing appeals to you and you are interested in joining the Novice squad then come and see us at the Bunfight (Southampton University's Clubs and Societies sign-up day), during freshers week, or get in touch with the Vice-Captains directly by visiting our Committee page.
We look forward to meeting you!
