Reading Regatta June 12-13 2010

The men's squad fielded a IM1/IM2 4+, an IM3 8+ and a novice 4+ over both days at Reading Regatta. All crews saw some tough opposition.

On the Saturday, the novice 4+ of R. Winzer, T. Dannatt, J. Coldwell, T. Clouter coxed by A. Andruszko raced well through two rounds over 1500m to race in the final against Reading University and lost out by only 1/2 a length. They returned on the Sunday coxed by C. Green and raced the shorter distance of 1100m with a lot of determination against City of Cambridge to win in the final, losing their novice statuses to uphold the SUBC tradition of winning novice coxed fours. Well done boys!

The 8+ of R. Higgs, W. Ellison, D. Saul, N. Papworth, R. Richardson, F. Markiewicz. M. Evans, A. Dane coxed by A. Andruszko, raced through St. Pauls in their first round on the Saturday, winning by a length and a half. They met Bournemouth University in their second round and were knocked out, losing by 2/3 length. They came back on Sunday (coxed by C. Green) but unfortunately lost in their first round against Bristol University, who eventually went on to beat the Bournemouth crew from the previous day. The 8 will now build up to Marlow regatta.

The 1st 4+ of M. Leavold, M. Baker, M. Hotton, G. Davis, coxed by A. Hing, raced IM1 on the Saturday, winning through two rounds against Oxford City (easily) and Vesta (1L 3/4), to meet Sheffield University in the final. They won convincingly with a strong rhythm. The same crew returned to race IM2 4+ on the Sunday and won against Bristol University, to then meet the same Sheffield Crew from the previous day. They won convincingly again with a time of 3.37, 3s faster than the Elite boats.

The men's squad as a whole performed well over a long and tiring weekend. All crews now look towards performance at Marlow International Regatta next weekend.

The Metropolitan Regatta - Sunday 6th June 2010

The men's squad took an IM2 4+ and IM3 8+ to the MET to get into the full swing of HRR prep. Both boats had good races.

The IM3 8+ raced comfortably to come 3rd in their heat, with 4th and 5th places dropping quite a few lengths back. They went through to the repechage to meet HSBCBC and Warwick as their main opposition in a tough race with only the winner going through to the final. They fought all the way against Warwick Uni to place 2nd in the rep to HSBCBC by 3/4 length.

The IM2 4+ raced a straight final against Henley RC, London, Trinity College and Thames Tradesmen. They had a strong first 500m and moved away with Henley to fight the remaining 1500m, with the other 3 crews ending up 25s behind. They had a solid race but were pushed by Henley who took a length out of them in the final 500m and came 2nd.

Both crews gained a good platform to step it up for Reading Regatta next weekend. ,

AU Ball

A number of SUBC members were recognised for their achievements in rowing and contributions to the Club at the recent AU Ball which was held at the Guildhall.

Club colours were awarded to Guy Davis, Jess Goosman and Adele Hing. These are awarded to individuals that have given extended service to the running of a club within the AU.

Half colours were awarded to Miles Leavold, Emily Derrig and Guy Davis. These are for sporting achievements and were awarded for the successes in the 2008/09 season.

Finally Bob Douglas, Men's squad coach, was awarded AU Fellowship. This is awarded to coaches or alumni who have given over ten years service to a club and who have made a significant impact to student sport. All of the men have been coached by Bob at some point, and he is often the first coach the the Novices have, making him a thoroughly deserving recipient of the award.

This is the second of our coaches to have been awarded this accolade, as women's coach Mike Berresford has received it previously.

All in all it was a successful night for SUBC and I hope that we can have similar achievements next year.

BUCS Regatta, May 2010

Holme Pierrepont offers weather of all kinds (usually wind) - this year was no exception. The men's squad raced over Sunday and Monday in some challenging conditions.

The Men's Beginner 8+ qualified 7th in the time trials and went on to race their heat, where they came 4th in a very tough race but unfortunately didn't make the semi-final.

The Men's Champ 4+ had suffered from illness and switching sides and came a disappointing 4th in their heat, and again did not make the final.

The Men's LWT 4x raced their heat and went through to the repechage where they stepped it up a gear or two. They raced extremely well but didn't make it through to the final but remained in high spirits and were pleased with their racing. Quote, Sam Ward 'I really, really enjoyed that race'.

The Men's LWT 8+, after some weight related issues, raced on Monday and achieved 5th in the final and had a strong race to beat Birmingham. They should be proud of this result in such a tough category. Well done - now you can all eat all your want!

The men's squad now turn to Henley Royal Regatta as our primary focus and return to Southampton to work in selecting our summer crews.

Easter Training Camp - Sabaudia, Italy, Men\'s Squad April 2010

The men's squad ventured to Italy in the last week of the holidays for Easter Training Camp.

Sabaudia provided a perfect location with a 6k lake of flat water, a good rowing club, a great hotel, beach and sun and good ice cream shops much to the lightweights dismay.

We had a good, hard, tiring five days of training on the lake to prepare for the beginning of regatta season, with the addition of "beach fun" (= beach torture) which seems to now appear annually on our Easter Camps.

All crews benefited significantly from the amount of time spent on the water and many individuals make some good changes in their rowing and the camp was enjoyed by all who attended.

Many thanks to Mike, Allan and Will for driving the boats across Europe, to Bob for coming with us and his ever brilliant coaching and to Canottieri Sabaudia Rowing Club for helping us organise our camp.

Head of the River Race, March 27th 2010, Putney

After a week of good training since Kingston Head, sun, rain, food posioning, crew meals, a few equipment disasters and a good nights sleep we finally set off to the Tideway to finish the season off.

We had 3 8's entered this year and the Tideway (for once) showed favourable conditions.

The HWT 1st 8+ set off 116 and were aiming for a top 100 placing. We did just that, achieving 98th (11th in IM3) with a time of 18.47. We had a good row and an interesting race with Waginger RV (German) crew's lack of rule abiding creating a nice fight for us at Hammersmith.

2nd 8+ had a good strong race, despite setting off out of order, overtaking several crews and having a good battle against City of Bristol 1 (who were supposed to start 75th, and ended up finishing 31st) and were overtaken at Hammersmith. They placed 158th, 27th in IM3 and time of 19.03, only 15 seconds behind the HWT 8+ (much to the heavyweights dismay). The LWT 8+ has had the highest 2nd crew placing at SUBC for several decades and jumped up 95 places from their start position of 253.

The 3rd 8+, wearing matching socks and headbands, had the target of automatic qualification in the top 280 to aim for (for the 2011 Head) and ended up breaking recent SUBC 3rd 8+ records placing 219th, 9th in Novice with a time of 19.26. They raced (and 'shut the door') into the highest of our 3rd 8+ placings for several decades. After starting 332 they jumped 113 places, an impressive figure.

For the first time in years we now have 3 guaranteed places at the 2011 Head.

The results as a squad are strong, with 60 places between each crew, the smallest gaps between crews in a long while. Well done to all crews for some excellent racing over the Head season and thank you to Bob, Mike, Will and Matt Bailey for coaching all crews over the winter months.

We will be moving into regatta season with training camp in Sabaudia, Italy, on April 12 to kick start it all off!

Kingston Head of the River, 20 March 2010

The Men's Squad set off to Surrey to race at a wet and windy Kingston Head. With a week before the HORR crews were looking to execute race plans and get a good run of the 5.2k course.

The HWT 1st 8+ had a mixed race, with coxing errors (by other crews) making a very interesting race for all. They placed 4th in IM3 and 17th overall with a time of 16.01.3. The LWT 2nd 8+ raced well but suffered in the wind, placed 38th overall and 13th in IM3 (time 16.34.2) The 3rd 8+ raced the first of their long distance head races and did very well to place 4th in Novice, with a time of 16.57.6 and 50th overall.

All crews are now preparing for the final run up to the end of the season.

The senior eight finished 7th out of 114 crews in the intermediate 3 division and overall came 57th improving 50 places on last year. The first novice eight did extremely well finishing 2nd out of 46 in their category just behind a composite crew and finished an impressive 107th overall beating many intermediate crews. The novice second eight also had a good race and a great day was had all round. The Head was a very pleasing end to a successful winter season for the girls.

Novice Women Head Season 2009-2010

The Novice Women's Squad have had a very successful Head Season, with two 8s competing throughout. At their first ever race, Bristol Head Race in November, they came first and second out of 16 crews - very impressive results which they have continued to achieve.

At BUCS Head in Peterborough, the 4+ won silver and the 8+ won gold out of 25 crews. They gained automatic entry into the Intermediate 8s event the next day and battled the heavy snow to come 4th, beating many other more experienced crews.

The final event of this season was WeHoRR on Saturday 13th March 2010. The girls finished off their successful first season by coming 107th and 279th - impressive results considering the international status of the event. The 1st VIII came second in the Novice Academic category and were only a few seconds off winning, and also beat many Intermediate 3 crews.

Well done to all the girls for training hard, and many thanks to Mike Beresford and Justin Smith for all their coaching and encouragement. A mention also to Roma Beresford for her continued support at all the races, even when the weather was rubbish!

BUCS Beginner and Championship Head, Peterborough, February 2010

Saturday: Our Beginner 8+ placed 12th out of 41 crews. We also raced in Beginner 1st 4+ and 2nd 4+. The 1st 4+ who had been training very well came 16th after a frustrating clash with another crew. The 2nd 4+ came 31st.
Sunday: The Championship 4+ suffered from a lack of time in their racing crew but came a solid 5th behind Imperial A & B, Reading and Newcastle. The 4+ showed strength and potential despite the snowy conditions. The lightweight quad came 8th after sitting in freezing conditions up at the start line. Our 2 eights came 8th and 21st respectively. With BUCS now over we are now focussing on the 8’s in the run up to the Head of the River Race.

Henley 4's and 8's Head, February 2009

The men’s squad had a set of mixed results at Henley head. With boats forming for both BUCS Head and Head of the River the senior men raced in a 1st 4+, a lightweight quad, and 2 eights. The quad placed 4th in IM2 4X-, and the 1st 4+ won at IM3 4+, with the 2nd fastest time of the whole day. The eights raced in the 3rd division, with the heavyweight 8+ winning at IM3 by 3 seconds over Molesey Boat Club. The lightweight 8+ placed 6th at IM3 just behind University of West England and Maidstone. The men’s novice squad formed an 8+ that place 3rd in Novice, losing to Oxford Brookes and St Pauls School, a very good result for their 2nd head race. The 8 broke down into a 1st Novice 4+ who came a very commendable 2nd.

Christmas Training Camp, December 2009

The whole men’s squad set off to Surrey for 5 days to a training camp held at Molesey Boat Club. The weather was not kind to us, with temperatures rarely above -freezing, but we made the most of better river conditions and the well-equipped gym. The novice squad joined the senior men to row together and the novice men made some considerable improvements. Guy Davis, Miles Leavold and Tom Plowman spent the camp preparing for GB 2nd Assessment Trials, which were eventually cancelled due to snow. Many thanks to Paul Thorpe and Rachel Padden for helping us organise the camp and the rest of Molesey Boat Club for being excellent hosts (and for putting up with us).

Upper Thames Small Boats Head November 2009

Our first race of the season was finally here, with a strong head wind and rough conditions. The senior men’s squad fielded 3 coxed fours and a coxless quad. Three of these four boats were to race at the eventually cancelled Four’s Head of the River. The 1st 4+ achieved 2nd place in IM1 4+ with the 4th fastest time of the day. The 2nd 4+ also came 2nd in IM3 4+, and the 3rd 4 placing 2nd in Novice by only 0.8 of a second. The IM3 4X- also came 2nd, with the boat taking on a lot of water due to the conditions. With all crews gaining 2nd place the day was frustrating but commendable.

Henley Royal Regatta 2009

Both fours raced at the qualifying event for the Prince Albert Challenge Cup. With only 16 crews to be selected, the 2nd lightweight 4+ of Toby Burrows, Alec Dane, Lloyd Cardy, Jonny Pearson and Adele Hing, raced with determination but did not qualify against the much bigger crews. The 1st 4+ of Miles Leavold, Tom Plowman, Guy Davis, Matt Baker and Marion Bolster, qualified and met Glasgow University in the 1st round on Wednesday which they won, easily. They then met University of London and lost to them in the quarter-finals on the Friday. Both crews raced extremely well throughout the season and gained some results to be proud of.

Ergothon

SUBC members spent 15 hours rowing and raised over £500 for charity in the process.
We started at midday on Monday 28th September and went on until 3 am!
Members of the club did 2 hour stints where they rowed for an hour and spent and hour shaking a bucket to persuade the new freshers to give us their unwanted change.
This was part of RAGfest 2009 and the money goes to the RAG charities.
