BUCS Beginner and Championship Head, Peterborough, February 2010
Saturday: Our Beginner 8+ placed 12th out of 41 crews. We also raced in Beginner 1st 4+ and 2nd 4+. The 1st 4+ who had been training very well came 16th after a frustrating clash with another crew. The 2nd 4+ came 31st.
Sunday: The Championship 4+ suffered from a lack of time in their racing crew but came a solid 5th behind Imperial A & B, Reading and Newcastle. The 4+ showed strength and potential despite the snowy conditions. The lightweight quad came 8th after sitting in freezing conditions up at the start line. Our 2 eights came 8th and 21st respectively. With BUCS now over we are now focussing on the 8’s in the run up to the Head of the River Race.

Henley 4's and 8's Head, February 2009
The men’s squad had a set of mixed results at Henley head. With boats forming for both BUCS Head and Head of the River the senior men raced in a 1st 4+, a lightweight quad, and 2 eights. The quad placed 4th in IM2 4X-, and the 1st 4+ won at IM3 4+, with the 2nd fastest time of the whole day. The eights raced in the 3rd division, with the heavyweight 8+ winning at IM3 by 3 seconds over Molesey Boat Club. The lightweight 8+ placed 6th at IM3 just behind University of West England and Maidstone. The men’s novice squad formed an 8+ that place 3rd in Novice, losing to Oxford Brookes and St Pauls School, a very good result for their 2nd head race. The 8 broke down into a 1st Novice 4+ who came a very commendable 2nd.

Christmas Training Camp, December 2009
The whole men’s squad set off to Surrey for 5 days to a training camp held at Molesey Boat Club. The weather was not kind to us, with temperatures rarely above -freezing, but we made the most of better river conditions and the well-equipped gym. The novice squad joined the senior men to row together and the novice men made some considerable improvements. Guy Davis, Miles Leavold and Tom Plowman spent the camp preparing for GB 2nd Assessment Trials, which were eventually cancelled due to snow. Many thanks to Paul Thorpe and Rachel Padden for helping us organise the camp and the rest of Molesey Boat Club for being excellent hosts (and for putting up with us).

Upper Thames Small Boats Head November 2009
Our first race of the season was finally here, with a strong head wind and rough conditions. The senior men’s squad fielded 3 coxed fours and a coxless quad. Three of these four boats were to race at the eventually cancelled Four’s Head of the River. The 1st 4+ achieved 2nd place in IM1 4+ with the 4th fastest time of the day. The 2nd 4+ also came 2nd in IM3 4+, and the 3rd 4 placing 2nd in Novice by only 0.8 of a second. The IM3 4X- also came 2nd, with the boat taking on a lot of water due to the conditions. With all crews gaining 2nd place the day was frustrating but commendable.

Henley Royal Regatta 2009
Both fours raced at the qualifying event for the Prince Albert Challenge Cup. With only 16 crews to be selected, the 2nd lightweight 4+ of Toby Burrows, Alec Dane, Lloyd Cardy, Jonny Pearson and Adele Hing, raced with determination but did not qualify against the much bigger crews. The 1st 4+ of Miles Leavold, Tom Plowman, Guy Davis, Matt Baker and Marion Bolster, qualified and met Glasgow University in the 1st round on Wednesday which they won, easily. They then met University of London and lost to them in the quarter-finals on the Friday. Both crews raced extremely well throughout the season and gained some results to be proud of.

Ergothon
SUBC members spent 15 hours rowing and raised over £500 for charity in the process.
We started at midday on Monday 28th September and went on until 3 am!
Members of the club did 2 hour stints where they rowed for an hour and spent and hour shaking a bucket to persuade the new freshers to give us their unwanted change.
This was part of RAGfest 2009 and the money goes to the RAG charities.

Men's Squad Winter Training Camp
The men's squad headed off for our now traditional winter training camp. We went to Kingston Rowing Club for 3 days. After a Christmas break comprising far too many turkey and mince pies we were sluggish to get started. After the first 30min ergo everyone’s fitness began to improve fast and with many water outings in small boats, technical strides were made all round.
Winter training camp is always a time for integration of the novice and senior squad and both squads benefited from the focus only a hard training camp can bring.
Many thanks have to go to Matt Evans and Peter O'Brien who organised an amazing and well run camp. The camp was a really good way to kick-start the head race season looking forward to BUSA and the Head of the River Race.

Fours' Head
The big race of the first part of term and we arrived to a mirror flat tideway early in the morning on Saturday 4rd November.
Southampton had 6 boats entered, a coxless four and two coxed fours both from the men's and women's squads.
The Senior 2 4- had a stonking race going off 205th and overtaking 4 crews (1 within 50m of the start). They finished 147th overall and 17th out of 43 in their event, Southampton's best placing in the Fours Head ever.
The two Senior 3 4+ boats had mixed races. Both overtook a number of crews and finished about 50 places higher than their start positions.
The women's Senior 2 4- did very well placing 4th in their event and 312 overall. They beat notable crews such as Cambridge University and Vesta.
The women's Senior 3 4+'s suffered from a lack of local knowledge about steering and so suffered on the infamous Fulham flats. They put in solid early season performances however.
A big thank you to all stags and any other supporters who we may or may not have heard shouting encouragement all along the river.

Name the Filippi Four
We would like to thank everyone who entered ‘Name the Four’ competition. We had a fantastic response!
The raffle took place on Wednesday 4th July at Henley Royal Regatta. The plan was to draw the name in Butlers Field, but unfortunately, due to heavy rainfall the field was flooded. We were forced to take cover in a nearby bar! Andy Triggs Hodge (GB Squad) kindly drew the winning ticket. The new boat will be named ‘Ray Carlton’.
Thank you once again for all your support.
