SUBC Senior Men's Squad
Over the last few years Southampton University boat club has been going from strength to strength. After being in the doldrums around the turn of the millennium, since 2003 the club has consistently performed at the HORR and Henley Royal Regatta. The future should see us carry on this improvement into one of the premier university boat clubs in the country. Over the last few years we have been working on building up a strong squad system, which insures that the competition for seats is fierce.
The club attends three training camps through out the year. The first just before the start of the second term, somewhere in the UK (previous locations include Hereford and Reading); this camp is about kick starting the assault on the head season. The second takes place in the Easter break and takes the club to Europe (previously to Banyoles in Spain, Ravenna in Italy and Harselwinkel in Belgium), this is about preparing for the regatta season with lots starts and sprint work. The final one is after exams and before Henley, this takes place on the Thames.
The Men’s squad train between 10 and 14 times a week including:
- At least 5 water sessions, 1 on Wednesday afternoons and two each day at the weekends.
- Two early morning sessions a week whether these are on the water (tide permitting) or running, erging or doing weights.
- Between 3 and 5 sessions of ergos or weights which take place either in the Jubilee sports centre or at the ergo room at the boat hard.
The aims for the squad for the 07-08 season:
- To place in the top 5 in snr3 4+ at the fours head of the river.
- To win a head race between 4s head and HORR.
- To place the 1st 8 in the top 70 at the eights head of the river.
- To win snr3 8 at Metropolitan or Marlow regatta.
- To Pre-qualify the 1st 8 for Henley and to send the 2nd 8 to qualifiers.
If you are coming to Southampton and have done any rowing or sculling before, we would be interested in hearing from you. Contact Us.
